Power Washing vs. Extraction: Why Rinsing Doesn't Actually Clean Artificial Turf
A pressure washer looks like it's doing something. Here's why it can leave contaminated water behind instead of removing it, and what a real extraction step does differently.
Pressure washing alone loosens buildup but often leaves the contaminated water behind in the infill. Extraction is the separate step that physically removes that water, which is why the two need to be paired for real results.
Renting a pressure washer for the weekend feels like the obvious fix. It's loud, it's powerful, and the water coming off the turf looks dirty, so it must be working. The problem is what happens to that dirty water after it leaves the nozzle, and for most homeowners, the answer is nowhere good.
What A Pressure Washer Actually Does
High pressure water is good at one thing: agitation. It loosens buildup that's worked its way into the infill, breaking up compacted dirt and lifting debris to the surface. That part genuinely helps, and it's why a pressure wash flush is part of our own Full Reset process.
But agitation isn't the same as removal. The pressure washer pushes water into the turf, and unless something pulls that water back out, it has nowhere to go except down, sideways, or back into the infill it just came from.
The Missing Step: Where Does The Water Go?
On turf with good drainage, some of that water eventually works its way out on its own. On turf that's aging, compacted, or sitting on clay soil, a lot of it doesn't. It pools in low spots, sits in the base layers, and keeps feeding the same bacteria that was causing the smell in the first place, just spread out a little differently than before.
What Extraction Actually Does Differently
Extraction is a separate step that comes after the pressure wash, not instead of it. A commercial extractor uses strong suction to physically pull that water, and everything dissolved in it, back out of the turf and into a holding tank instead of leaving it to soak or evaporate on its own. It's the same basic idea as a wet vacuum for carpet, scaled up for outdoor turf and used specifically to finish the job a pressure wash starts.

Should You Try This Yourself?
A rented pressure washer without an extraction step can genuinely make a yard smell worse before it smells better, since it's stirring up buildup without a way to remove it. If you're going to pressure wash your own turf, keep the pressure moderate and give the yard plenty of time to dry and drain, and know that it's addressing the surface, not the source.
